Summary

The authors have compiled this stirring collection of profiles in courage to honor the Sailors and Marines awarded the Silver Star by the U.S. Navy while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.  The book also includes selected profiles of Silver Star recipients from previous wars whose stories stand out as the best among an elite group.

The Silver Star is a companion book to The Navy Cross, also written by James Wise and Scott Baron and published by the Naval Institute Press.  The purpose of both books is to document the heroism of the young American men and women who have fought and continue to fight an enemy bent on destroying freedom in the world.  In this ongoing war against terrorism, our servicemen and women continue to carry out their missions with determination and great courage.  They display a dedication to their tasks and to each other that must be recognized and preserved for future generations.  This book provides that recognition for their gallantry.
